Thompson Madrid and Its Modern Biophilic Courtyard

Last Update:

In luxury hospitality, the fusion of exquisite designs with biophilic elements is becoming a prominent trend. Thompson Madrid exemplifies this well in its newly renovated biophilic courtyard and selections of biophilic materials in the guest rooms. The hotel connects guests with hints of nature, even in the heart of a metropolitan.

I stayed in their standard guest room for a few nights this summer. Upon entering and opening the curtain, the view through the glazing wall was stunning. The room faces a central courtyard which is filled with synthetic plants hung from the 7th floor to the ground level. These plants reflect on the surrounding dark glazing panels, creating an infinite illusion of floating greens.

Multiple circular lights are also installed on each hanging cable at various heights. At night, they transformed the hallway into a sea of floating lanterns. For a few moments, I found myself happily lost in the hallway, captivated by their reflections.

This is the hotel’s standout feature. Unlike typical biophilic designs that simply fill a corner or a wall with greenery, this modern biophilic courtyard combines lighting and reflections, freeing typical forms of plants and embracing the modern grid pattern to create an infinite illusion.

The biophilia is the space!

Interiorly, you’ll find black stone and marble slabs framed by medium-dark wood panels and brass throughout the building. These elements create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They add a tactile element to the space and maintain a natural aesthetic that complements the overall biophilic theme.
